Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis) -
The Red-crowned Crane is a symbol of Japan and a conservation success story. Brought back from the brink of extinction with only a handful of remaining birds left just a few decades ago. There is now once again a year-round population on the northern island of Hokkaido. In the winter, they gather in snow-covered grain fields and the males "dance" in elaborate displays known the world over.
