Siberian Crane (Leucogeranus leucogeranus) is a critically endangered species. With the exception of a tiny population in Western Siberia (10-20 individuals), and rare vagrants like this one, in southern Japan, the entire global population of perhaps 4000 birds winters in one location along the River Yangtze in China. Much of their remaining habitat there will be submerged under the pending Three Gorges Dam project, potentially sending this species to extinction.
