Snowy Owl in Flight

A Snowy Owl launches from a perch on a fence post.

This owl was not "bumped" or disturbed for a flight shot. Being birds of the open tundra, Snowy Owls tend to perch wide out in the open on the ground, or on elevated perches, where they generally sit motionless for long periods during the day. Intentionally disturbing them off the perch (or simply pushing them by getting too close for comfort) is an all too common, and unethical, practice by some photographers hoping for some kind of action shot. It harasses the bird, causing it to needlessly expend its energy.

This owl was on a working farm, and had flushed from further away when a farm worker got too close. After using this roost near me for about 30 minutes, it simply returned to its original spot, affording me this look at its outstretched wings.
